Midfielder Ross Paule is a 2004 Supporters’ Shield winner who spent three years with the Crew before concussions cut his career short after the 2005 season. He is currently the women’s soccer coach at his alma mater, Creighton University. In the wake of the Crew being saved from relocation, Paule took the time to send me some thoughts on the matter.

On why the Crew being 100% officially saved is important to him:
Crew SC is such a massive part of my life and is my club. It was the best group of teammates I was ever around. To me, the soul of the club is built on being a team, with a team-first mentality. A family. It was a unique feeling compared to my other clubs I played for. From the moment I arrived in Columbus, it felt like a home and a place I wanted to be. We had a talented team, but what made us so successful was the character of the team and leaders. It was a fun environment to play in. We played for each other, and successes by individuals were shared and celebrated. Our club and fans believed in us. Some of my favorite playing memories are at that stadium with our awesome supporters who are still supporting today!!!
On Dr. Edwards, who is now part of the ownership group:
Dr. Edwards was huge in this culture. He truly cared for us as people, not just patients. He was always joking with us, upbeat, encouraging, and positive.
On the fan-led #SaveTheCrew movement:
From a distance, I have watched the process to save the Crew. It’s amazing to see the community, the supporters, past players, and new ownership come together and make sure the Crew lives on. The Columbus Crew is a franchise that has fans that truly care, so many past players who call the Crew their club, and owners who love their players and appreciate their supporters. With all that in place, no doubt there is success ahead.
Playing for the Crew is special. You only know this as a player if you got the chance. I’m thankful for my time with the Crew and am so happy for Dr. Edwards. His players will play for more than a paycheck. They will play for the badge and each other. Can’t wait to get back to a game in the near future.
