Robert Warzcha is the Crew’s all-time leader in assists AND coaching wins. He’s also very happy that #SaveTheCrew was an incredible success. We chatted for a few minutes on the night of the big announcement. He regretted that he could not be at the announcement in person, but he was out of town. He appreciated getting invited by the club nonetheless. Here’s what he had to say during our few minutes on the phone.
On Dr. Edwards being part of the ownership group with the Haslam family:
I’ve known Doc since 1996. That is incredible. A person like him, he is the longest Crew employee because he was there on the first day, and then for him to do something like this and invest in the Crew…
His kids grew up around the team. They would be running around on the field and he would go on preseason trips with us and bring the girls. And now he’s the person that basically saved the Crew and made it so they can stay in Columbus. It’s incredible. It’s like a happy-ending story. And all of the players, we were involved with him emotionally because he make us play. And now he’s doing this, which is incredible.
On the fans using their passion and talents to #SaveTheCrew:
This is a perfect example. It was almost mission impossible, but they believed it. They believed it and fought for the club that they love. It’s an unbelievable story that is going to be remembered for years and years to come. This is great. I’m sure in 2019, the support of the team is going to be incredible, and I hope that around Columbus, we can see more things that the Crew is in town. Listen, I drive around Columbus and you don’t see anything for the Crew. Maybe now we can do something to tell the people that the Crew is in town. Like I said, the fans did a great job with the movement and everything else. The fans were incredible and they got rewarded for that. They stepped up and were behind the team 100%.
